Fortuitously, it falls to me to write the Halloween blog. Lucky, of course because my new book Robyn Silver: The Midnight Chimes is about a girl who is born on the stroke of midnight. Being a 'Chime' means she can see monsters that no one else can see.
I was particularly fortunate that Scholastic chose the awesome Renee Kurilla to illustrate the front cover and create inside artwork including a Monster Compendium at the back of the book. I'm going to share some of her brilliant work here.
Having run a lot of events and school visits lately has left me pretty certain that children of various ages and tastes all LOVE a nasty monster. I've been inventing new ones on a flipchart in all sorts of places, aided and abetted by kids with some very strange ideas. I've drawn monster spiders wearing stilettos and snakes that shoot lasers out of their eyes but are afraid of kittens - to name only two!
So here are a few options when creating a monster with illustrations from the book drawn by Renee Kurilla.
You could go for maximum tentacles...
You could design a small but extremely bad-tempered monster...
You could go for one you only see from the corner of your eye...
Or you could invent one that's come to feed on your soul...

I love the idea of your book, Paula. The monsters also remind me of Pokemon ... I wonder if there's a marketing opportunity there! Do the illustrations look like the monsters you imagined?
ReplyDeleteYes the illustrations are very accurate! I know what you mean about Pokemon, although the characters don't catch them in balls or fight with them. I think it's going to be an autumn of monsters as the Fantastic Beasts film will be out in a couple of weeks. I had no idea when I started the book 3 years ago that I would end up so on trend!
